Harry Cavanough (1898–1966) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s. He was a multi premiership winner with South Sydney Rabbitohs and he also played for Newtown in the NSWRL competition.

Playing career[edit]

Cavanough made his first grade debut for Newtown in 1921 against Balmain. Cavanough's time at Newtown was not a successful one as the club spent most of the time near the bottom of the ladder.

In 1925, Cavanough joined South Sydney and in 1926 was a member of the premiership winning team defeating University in the grand final. Cavanough went on to win two further premierships with Souths in consecutive years against St George and arch rivals Eastern Suburbs as the club went through a golden era in the 1920s winning a total of 5 premierships.

Cavanough retired at the end of the 1928 season. He also represented New South Wales on 23 occasions between 1926 and 1928.[2]

Charles Innes De Clare Cavanough

The eighth child of Richard Cavanough and Ann Cross was named Charles Innes De Clare Cavanough. The ‘De Clare’ part of this family line’s name derives from the idea that the Cavanoughs were originally French Hugenot of this surname. De Clare was passed down for several generations. Born on the 22nd of February 1847 Charles took up study in Queensland, qualifying just before his 21st birthday

Charles wed Robina Alexandrina Fullerton Read at Tenterfield on 25 March 1875, the Rev Robert Allen presiding. Witnesses to the marriage were A J Melville and Jemina Reid. Robina was the daughter of James Johnstone Reid and Margaret Malcolm Holmes from Scotland - 4th daughter and 5th issue of 7. Robina’s father was a cabinetmaker. The Reid family arrived 1854 aboard William Miles and after a short stay in Brisbane they travelled overland by bullock wagon to Tenterfield where they settled.[i]

On May 2 1853 george bought 20 acres off his father in law Thomas Gosper where he built his house opposite the church of England on the Upper Colo.It is here they set up an accomadition house which was there for many years.

Percy who had been on active service for nearly three years, was invalided home about three months ago, and although he had been operated upon three times for a dangerous wound in the head, in which a silver plate had to be inserted, he looked remarkably well, and anticipated with confidence being recalled to rejoin the big fight in France at the expira tion of his six months sick leave.Percy’s ward medals, 1914-15 Star No 21293 and British War Medal No 16990, were sent to his brother Alfred Rowland Robinson, as the eldest surviving male member of the family as per army protocol, in January 1922.
